Abstract
This paper examines how the demand for the multifunction optical disk drives developed out of the evolution of optical storage technology along a typical technological development pattern from laser disk, to computer disk, to CD-ROM, and write-once. Details are provided about WORM/magneto-optical multifunction technology, including ablative recording, bubble-forming recording, dye-polymer recording, phase-change recording, and magneto-optical recordings. The market and technical limitations of WORMs are also reviewed. The author considers the future of multifunction technology in terms of standardization, and economies of scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
