Abstract
Comparison of the data from the 1986 National Mortality Followback Survey and the 1986 National Health Interview Survey with that from the 1960 Matched Record Study shows an inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and mortality. The data also shows a widening gap in the mortality of people with higher levels of education and those with lower educational attainment, with the disparity in mortality rates increasing for both sexes from 1960 to 1986. The results point to the need to increase socioeconomic efforts to decrease the mortality gap.
