Abstract
This report constitutes an addendum to the previously submitted reports on standard archaeological test excavations carried out on behalf of Wexford County Council and the National Roads Authority. The addendum documents the post?excavation works undertaken on features designated Forestalstown 1 and Camlin 9 which were fully excavated during the test excavations in 2009 and 2013. The works were undertaken as part of Stage (i) of the Archaeological Services Contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N25 New Ross Bypass Road Scheme, which extends from Cappagh townland in Co. Kilkenny to Knockroe townland in Co. Wexford. The Minister of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, following consultation with the National Museum of Ireland, issued Directions to Wexford County Council on 8 March 2007 for archaeological test excavation works relating to the road development. The registration number, E4067, was allocated by the DoEHLG for Stage (i) test excavation of the proposed route. The initial phase of work was carried out in 2009 under the directorship of Liam Hackett of Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd, with the assistance of Lisa Doyle, James Hession and Sinead Marshall. A further phase of work was undertaken in November/ December 2013 under the directorship of Mandy Stephens of Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd. Following a constraint study and a route selection report, an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) was carried out on the preferred route, including chapters on the archaeological and architectural heritage (CRDS Ltd 2007a; 2007b). The EIS included recommendations for test?excavations along the entire route, survey of the townland boundaries and survey of a number of architectural/built heritage sites, to be completed as part of Stage (i) work. Archaeological test trenching along the majority of the route was carried out by Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd (formerly Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd) on behalf of Wexford County Council between 30 November and 18 December 2009 under Excavation Registration Number E4067 and all bar two of the sites discovered were subsequently excavated in 2010. A number of areas within the scheme (notably in Testing Area 1) were not accessible during the 2009 phase of test excavation. In line with the recommendations set out in the EIA for the scheme and the Ministerial Directions, outstanding test excavation of 12 previously untested areas (Stage (i)) and pre?excavation assessments of two areas (Stage (ii)) were completed, between 22 October and 29 November 2013. The 2013 testing programme was conducted under an amendment to the existing method statement for Excavation Registration Number E4067, approved by the Dept. of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, under the direction of Mandy Stephens, assisted by Patricia Long. This report is an addendum to the reports on the results of the 2009 and 2013 phase of works, comprising standard Stage (i) test excavations and Stage (ii) pre?excavation assessment of archaeological features uncovered (Doyle et al 2010; Stephens 2014). During testing in 2009 six isolated features/groups of features were identified and fully excavated at Stage (i). Five of these contained no artefacts. However, prehistoric pottery sherds were recovered from one of two adjacent pits at a site designated Camlin 9. A further seven isolated archaeological features were also identified and fully excavated at Stage (i) in 2013. Six of these isolated features were generally sterile or typologically undiagnostic and necessitated no further post? excavation work. However, a charcoal sample from one of these isolated sites, a charcoal?production pit designated Forestalstown 1, was deemed suitable for radiocarbon dating. This addendum to the previously submitted reports on the 2009 and 2013 test excavations describes the post?excavation analysis of the charcoal?production pit designated Forestalstown 1 and the pottery recovered from the pit at Camlin 9. It constitutes the final report on the excavation of these sites.
