Abstract
An existing finite element program has been extended to use a STEP compatible database for storage and retrieval of model, mesh and solution information. The database system is configured by a data dictionary derived from an EXPRESS scheme. The database helps to create an open, extendable environment and this has been demonstrated by adding stress, thermal and mesh adaption procedures to the existing software.ETX
