Abstract
The article discusses the construction of the Pentagon, which was an unprecedented effort during a time when the U.S. was not at war. The construction was part of a military mobilization effort triggered by the fall of France and the Low Countries in 1940. Lt. Col. Brehon B. Somervell was tasked with leading the construction, and he assembled a design team to create a four-story building to hold 40,000 workers. The building was designed with five concentric, five-sided rings and was made of reinforced concrete to conserve steel for the war effort. Construction began in September 1941 and was completed in February 1943, slightly exceeding the original timeline. The Pentagon became the world's largest office building and played a significant role in the war effort. [Extracted from the article]
