Abstract
The article highlights the case of Stephan Thernstrom, historian at the Harvard University. Thernstrom, widely known on campus as a liberal, was charged by three black students with "racial insensitivity" in his lectures in an introductory history course, "The Peopling of America." Instead of coming to him with their complaints, they went to an administrative committee and to the student newspaper. Thernstrom was so discouraged by the student attack and the administration's failure to defend his academic freedom that he decided not to teach the course again.
