Abstract
The article discusses the importance of improving tree seed and seedling sourcing practices in tree planting projects. It highlights the current problems in sourcing high-quality seeds and seedlings, such as the use of genetically unadapted and poor-quality materials, which result in low tree establishment and slow growth. The authors suggest that investors should make funding conditional on applicants providing a clear explanation of their sourcing methods. A survey of the global tree planting community supports this idea, with a majority of respondents agreeing that applicants should explain their seed and seedling sourcing. The article concludes by recommending the implementation of mandatory questions on sourcing in funding application templates and the need for collaboration between investors, planters, and researchers to monitor costs and benefits.
