Abstract
Written by researchers and clinicians in the field of addictive behaviors, this chapter investigates the nature of, and potential relief from, cycles of addictive behaviors from the viewpoints of both Buddhism and Western psychology, and explores the overlap of perspectives and practices from these traditions. Several recent clinical applications are described, and empirical studies of current programs integrating Buddhism and contemporary cognitive behavioral science and “third wave” behavior therapies for addictive disorders are reviewed. These include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and various mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs). The current state, ongoing challenges, future potential, and realized limitations of these programs and the corpus of research literature are discussed.
