Abstract
Nowadays, the ability to detect arsenic in drinking water is a very important subject because of arsenic's toxicity. In this sense, it is necessary to have economical and portable detection methodologies in order to control water quality, mainly in remote communities without access to expensive equipment such as atomic absorption. Currently, electrochemical methods are a low cost alternative which can be used outside the laboratory; however, these techniques use toxic or precious metals as working electrodes. The main interference in the quantification of arsenic is the Cu(II) because an intermetallic compound is formed with arsenic. In this paper we explore the co-deposition of Cu on a glassy carbon electrode to quantify As(III) in H2SO4 as a supporting electrolyte. The methodology reported a detection limit of 5.2 ug L-1, helpful to following the official guidelines. Zn2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Hg2+ and Cl- are not significant interferences in quantification.
