Abstract
The obesity and insulin resistance that characterize polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) predispose to both type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. Correction of metabolic abnormalities, particularly insulin resistance, reportedly can lessen hyperandrogenism and enhance fertility. Adiponectin recently was identified as an adipocytokine having insulin-sensitizing and possibly antiatherosclerotic effects. This study sought to identify determinants of circulating adiponectin and its potential for reversing insulin resistance in 62 consecutive women with PCOS who were compared with 35 healthy control women.
