Abstract
BackgroundCause-specific mortality statistics are important primary inputs for informed policy formulation. However, the proportion of ill-defined causes of death (CoD) was persistently high in some regions of Brazil even in 2004. After this date, the Brazilian Government implemented a project aimed at decreasing this proportion, especially in higher priority states and municipalities. In this project, verbal autopsy (VA) questionnaires have routinely been implemented as part of epidemiological surveillance activities since 2009. This study aims to evaluate the performance of this project and the completion rate of VA by performing a case study in a state from the northeast region.
