Abstract
The process of developing this thesis started with the study of several strategies of raw materials management, that were used to produce personal ornamentation inside Neolithic communities between VI-IV millennium BC at Iberian Peninsula. First of all, we established ornamental morphological types, which ornaments form exist during this time, and the raw materials: shell, bone, antlers, tusk, stone, mineral, coral, seeds; we’ve also have taken an approach to technological procedures to create the different ornaments and, finally, the use-wear analysis and the archaeological context allow to describe the final functionality, with the purpose of elaborate interpretative conclusions about social and economic level that involves those artefacts in past communities. Samples that were studied came from these archaeological sites: Can Roqueta II (Sabadell, Barcelona), Can Roqueta/Can Revella (Sabadell, Barcelona), Can Filuà (Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Barcelona), Sant Pau del camp (Barcelona), La Gardunya (Barcelona), Roc del Migdia (Vilanova de Sau, Barcelona), Cova de les Ànimes (Matadepera, Barcelona), Bòbila Madurell (Sant Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona), Cova del Frare (Matadepera, Barcelona), Pla del riu de les Marcetes (Manresa, Barcelona), Pujolet de Moja (Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona), El Bordellet (Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona) Mas d’en Boixos (Pla del Penedès, Barcelona), Serra del Mas Bonet (Vilafant, Girona), La Draga (Banyoles, Girona), Feixa del Moro (Juberri, Andorra), Tomba del Segudet (Ordino, Andorra). The individual study of the ornaments sample has allowed to evidence some results in different areas: in the aspect of processes of raw material transformation, technological procedures and forms, it has been possible to distinguish technological traditions that they can be considered common or shared, they could have been transmitted between Neolithic groups. Also, it has been possible to identify differentiated own technologies, and odd morphological types at some archaeological sites, like these ornaments were an exclusive production. In fact, we studied work areas, in this case the La Draga atelier, where circular shell beads and shell pendant-beads were manufactured. Some ornaments evidence groups contact since a primary or initial pattern prefigured that was copied and imitated. Those results allow us to expose different ornaments circulation networks in Ancient Neolithic, basically following the coast of the Mediterranean. With some types of ornaments, the flow direction came from the south that influence inwards Catalonia following rivers courses, especially in Middle Neolithic. Finally, both Ancient Neolithic and Middle Neolithic, ornaments identify a group but, at the same time, also a large and regional communities taking part in a cohesive world, in symbolical and economical level. A few ornaments are singular, (different forms, different raw materials…) differentiators from de rest of the community, where also aesthetic value can be considerate.
