Abstract
Globally, a majority of the countries including India have been facing a high burden of poor health status and physical immobility among the older population and demanding a greater need for social security and caregiving. Recent studies have shown differences in health and disability by gender, marital status, and economic dependency of the older population individually using the cross-sectional analyses with a ‘single-axis framework’. In India, barely there is any study that focused on elderly health status and functional disability influenced by the multitude effects of ‘intersectional axes of gender, marital status, and economic dependency’ using the robust analysis. We used pooled data from two rounds of National Sample Surveys, i.e. 71st (2014) and 75th (2017–2018), nationally representative, on Social Consumption (Health) information conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation, Government of India. The results suggest that widowed and economically fully dependent older populations have a greater probability of poor self-rated health (PSRH) and physical immobility (PI) than currently married and economically independent counterparts. Relatively gender makes a smaller influence on PSRH and PI, while the combined disadvantage of economic dependency and widowed marital status creates a higher likelihood for the PSRH and PI among the older population in India.
