Abstract
Background: Mnemonics are the “backbone” of the structured transmission of relevant information during handover in the emergency department—the point of transition between prehospital and hospital care. In Germany, there still is no common standard or specific guideline regarding which mnemonic should be used for handover. The present study is the first to define handover content, based on a structured and multistage consensus-building process by experts (mandate holders). The aim is to create a starting point for the further development and standardization of a common national mnemonic for handover. Methods: A Delphi method that based on the regulations of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) was used. Results: In the course of the Delphi process, it was possible to determine not only the specific content of the mnemonic, but also its sequence. The content was defined in terms of crew resource management and patient identification, description of the emergency situation, emergency priority (ABCDE scheme) and vital signs, measures performed, medical history, summary including the possibility of team questions, and duration of handover. Conclusion: The results of this work provide the evidence-based foundation for developing a specific mnemonic. Once a suitable mnemonic has been developed, further research should focus on testing its suitability for everyday use in the context of a (pre-)hospital application study. This should be done with the simultaneous development of a corresponding training concept. In the long term, the aim is to establish a national concept.
