Abstract
In this paper, ZnS, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) capped Ag-doped ZnS(Ag:ZnS) and uncapped Ag:ZnS nanoparticles were prepared by the coprecipitation method and studied in detail their photocatalytic activity. The presence of functional groups in the synthesized particles is confirmed by FTIR spectra. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated a cubic zinc blende structure and the particle size of ZnS is 4.14 Å, PVA-capped Ag:ZnS 3.48 Å, and uncapped Ag:ZnS 5.53 Å. The energy band gap is found to be in the range of 3.2 to 3.5 eV. The surface morphology of nanoparticles was observed and investigated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and EDX analysis. The photocatalytic degradation of Eriochrome black-T and Evan’s blue dyes was successfully photo reduced by nanoparticles. The results indicated that these nanoparticles act as photocatalyst under the sunlight. The EBT and EB dyes were degraded more than 90 % in the presence of a capping agent (PVA). However, in the absence of PVA, 90% degradation occurs but the time of degradation becomes more. Thus, this technique can be the best technique for the safe degradation of water contaminated with textile matters.
