Abstract
Colloidal silica-filled deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (DPNR-graft-PMMA/silica) was prepared and characterized. DPNR-graft-PMMA/silica was prepared by graft copolymerization of NR latex with MMA and tert-butyl hydroperoxide/tetraethylenepentamine as initiators, followed by the addition of silica precursor, i.e., vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES). Various amounts of colloidal silica were introduced by varying VTES concentrations accordingly. The resulting DPNR-graft-PMMA/silica sample was analyzed through Fourier transformed infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. PMMA was successfully grafted on NR particles, and colloidal silica particles productively generated in DPNR-graft-PMMA latex. Properties of DPNR-graft-PMMA/silica, i.e., tensile strength and hardness, were significantly improved than those of DPNR. Low water contact angles of DPNR-graft-PMMA and DPNR-graft-PMMA/silica indicated the polar characteristic of colloidal silica and PMMA particles, enhancing the compatibility of those components in DPNR-graft-PMMA/silica.
