Abstract
In the modern digital era, cultural content platforms are diversifying. The place of cultural consumption that used to be represented movies and TV is expanding its base to OTT (streaming service), web-based cartoons and dramas, and mobile platforms. As a result, OSMU(one sorce multi use) of cultural contents has also become a common phenomenon. So is the movies. There is an increasing number of works that are made into films by ‘adaptation’ original scripts from other media rather than original scenarios. So, the most important one is the adaptation. Knowing the difference between a movie and other media and have adaptation it to the optimized ‘STORY’ of the movie based on that can guarantee the success of the movie. Therefore, this paper aims to help the actual film adaptation process through comparative analysis of the original novel 「Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption」 and the movie 〈The Shawshank Redemption〉. The reason why 〈The Shawshank Redemption〉 was chosen as the research subject is because of the original author ‘Stephen King’. He is the world"s best-selling author and who provided the source for the movie ‘Story’, in which many of his works were made into films. What made Stephen King"s novels turn into a prolific adaptation film? Second, the movie 〈The Shawshank Redemption〉 has been ranked number one for several years on the US site IMDB, which is based on audience votes. In particular, it is necessary to analyze the secret of its popularity in that it has been loved for a long time through the evaluation of the audience since its release. The study minimized the discussion of the broad meaning according to the category of movie adaptation, and conducted an analysis through a specific comparison between the original novel and the adaptation movie. In order to perform it, the analysis was divided into subject and composition, and incidents and characters. This is because it was judged that this items was necessary to show the differences and contact points between the novels and the films. I expect this study to be of practical help to the film adaptation of the novel.
