Abstract
(Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand. 2019;98:515–522)Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) has been increasingly used to gauge the quality of maternal care. Worldwide, rates of SMM are increasing and are higher in women in ethnic minorities. Standardized SMM reviews have been recommended by the World Health Organization and other bodies to determine the preventability of SMM and to identify opportunities to improve SMM rates. This study aimed to establish the national incidence of SMM in intensive care units (ICUs) or high dependency units (HDUd) in New Zealand, and additionally, to establish ethnicity-specific rates of SMM.
