Abstract
This chapter discusses Roman jurisdiction in Illyricum. Damasus' successor Siricius had evidently felt some kind of threat with the powers implicit in the honour decreed for Constantinople in 381. The extent of jurisdiction attaching to Constantinople was an issue both in the tension between Old Rome and New Rome about the bilingual region of Illyricum. Nicolas' decision to launch a rival Latin mission to the Bulgars, and Christian baptism and tribal conversion and the intervention of Paulician heretics is also discussed.
