Abstract
This chapter draws together the archaeological, literary, epigraphic, and numismatic evidence for Archaic Teos, and considers the character and chronology of Teos’ colonizing activities in the Black Sea and Aegean Thrace. The early history of the settlement at Abdera is analysed in detail, beginning with the mid-seventh-century Klazomenian colony on the site, subsequently reinforced or replaced by a new group of Teian settlers in the mid-sixth century. The early development of the urban settlement at Abdera is sketched, with a detailed discussion of the important but complex and ambiguous evidence deriving from Pindar’s fragmentary second Paean. The chapter concludes with a short account of conditions at Teos and Abdera in the aftermath of the Persian Wars.
