Abstract
(b Brighton, S. Australia, Jan 21, 1903; d Donvale, Victoria, March 11, 1991). Australian painter . Sauerbier studied at the School of Fine Arts in Adelaide in the 1920s under the teaching of Frederick Britton (1889–1931) and Frederick Millward Grey (1899–1957), and at the Central School of Art, London in 1925. In London, Sauerbier was influenced by British Post-Impressionism and developed a direct approach to her painting (e.g. View from a London Window, c. 1928; Adelaide, A.G. S. Australia). Sauerbier returned to Adelaide in 1927 and exhibited regularly with the South Australian Society of Arts. Around 1932 she moved to Port Willunga, south of Adelaide and restored an old house, which became a focus for artists. Using a broad style and vivid palette, Sauerbier painted views of the rugged Fleurieu coastline. In their flattened perspective and bold use of colour, these abstracted view were far in advance of conservative artistic standards in Adelaide. Sauerbier influenced Horace Trennery (1899–1958) and Marjorie Gwynne, who painted the region and with similar boldness.
