[India and South Asia before 1947] Asian region comprising the vast peninsula bounded on the north by the Himalayan range and on the west, south and east by the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. This article covers the major arts of modern Pakistan, India and Bangladesh from earliest times until 1947; some of the subsections on minor arts and on tribal and village art also discuss material dating later than 1947. Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan, Kingdom of are covered separately. For developments after 1947 see India, Republic of, Pakistan, Islamic Republic of and, after 1971, Bangladesh, People’s Republic of. Subsections of this survey have been arranged chronologically and geographically. Dynastic appellations have generally been avoided, as regional styles were not necessarily linked to ruling houses, and patronage was often broadly based. The early periods are analysed on a north–south basis, while regional developments in the later periods are covered by geographical area. For purposes of discussion, the term north-west is understood roughly as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan; north as Uttar Pradesh (including the Delhi region); central as Madhya Pradesh; west as Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra; east as Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal and Bangladesh; and south as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
