Abstract
(b Namur, March 29, 1759; d Brussels, March 13, 1851). Flemish painter and draughtsman. He learnt drawing in Charleroi from Pierre-Balthasar de Blocq (1729–95), who later sent him to Antwerp to study with Andries Cornelis Lens. François also attended the Antwerp academy (1773–6), where he was taught by Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns. After leaving the academy, he received portrait commissions and also cooperated with Lens on a History of Bacchus series (Brussels, Mus. A. Anc.) for the Salon Stevens. François was in Italy from 1778 to 1781; there he studied the work of Raphael, Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni, Domenichino and Guercino. In 1780 he visited Naples and saw the ruins of Paestum, and the following year he travelled to Vienna, where he spent six months. He returned to the southern Netherlands in 1782, sometime after which he executed a series of four paintings, the History of Venus, for Baron de Vinck.
