Abstract
Chinese, 17th – 18th century, male. Born 1632, in Changshu (Jiangsu); died 1717. Painter. Landscapes. At the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing dynasty, a large number of artists gathered around Dong Qichang (1555-1636), who was establishing a new orthodoxy based on the study and imitation of the ancients. The most illustrious representatives of this new trend, inspired reformers who were also capable of bringing new life to work from the past, were the Four Wangs (Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, Wang Yuanqi and Wang Hui). The elder two of the group, Wang Shimin and Wang Jian, formed the link between Dong Qichang and their disciples Wang Yuanqi and Wang Hui. All four came from Jiangsu; they supported and encouraged each other, and complimented each other’s work. Their work is highly appreciated in China, though less so in the West, where it is often seen as repetitive and monotonous, rather than as reflecting the artists’ own, individual interpretations.
