Abstract
British, 19th century, male. Born 1791, in Gyffin; died 1866, in Rome. Sculptor. Busts, statues, groups. John R.A. Gibson was nine years old when his father, a landscape gardener, settled in Liverpool. At school he persisted in drawing in spite of repeated punishments. He was placed in an apprenticeship with a cabinet maker at 14 and with a wood carver a year later. But his ambition was to become a great sculptor and a year later he succeeded in transferring his apprenticeship contract to Samuel Francis, a sculptor in marble. From that moment he was on the road to success. He very quickly attracted the attention of the historian William Roscoe, who gave him the run of his house including his rich library and took it upon himself to direct his studies and support him.
