Spanish, 19th century, male. Born 6 January 1827, in Granada. Painter. History painting. José Contreras y Muñoz was a master of 19th-century Spanish art. He first worked in commerce but went on to study painting with Agapito Lopez de San Roman and in 1847 worked in Madrid with Federico de Madrazo. After spending some years as director of the Cordova museum, he eventually devoted himself to painting and became a regular exhibitor at all the major Spanish exhibitions. He is known for his ...
