Abstract
This observational study looks at the introduction of an alternative technique for ventilatory support, bubble CPAP, in a referral hospital in a developing nation. The use of bubble CPAP was associated with a 50% reduction in the need for mechanical ventilation with no difference in mortality. Importantly, bubble CPAP could be initiated and administered by nurses after only 1–2 months of on-the-job training, and the cost of the machine is significantly cheaper, it requires less expertise to administer, and it has fewer risks than mechanical ventilation. This makes bubble CPAP an excellent option for higher-level neonatal care in resource-limited areas.
