Abstract
This study attempted to determine the founding period of the Ikgun, which was established at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, reveal its purpose, analyze its structure and operation method, and identify its characteristics. The Ikgun was used not only in the Yuan Dynasty but also in the Goryeo period during the Yuan intervention period as a temporary unit to assist the Chinese army. However, the Ikgun, established at the end of Goryeo, can trace its origins from Kublai Khan's garrison army, and its characteristics are similar in that it serves the purpose of defending regional strategic points as a standing army. However, King Gongmin managed the Ikgun in the form of unity between the military and the people in accordance with the circumstances of Goryeo. Ik-gun was operated under a total mobilization system of military and civilian unity in which all rank below Bongikdaebu, the second rank of servant, and farmers, hwacheok, common people, slaves, privateers, and local villagers were mobilized. Due to the nature of the area called Seobuk-myeon, military service was exempted, so Goryeo did not have any major problems. Uwang's nationwide expansion, which was operated until it failed, but was implemented without proper consideration, resulted in failure, giving rise to several backlashes.
