뉴스 프레임은 독자들이 뉴스가 의미하는 바를 이해하도록 돕는 언어적·시각적 장치를 말한다. 대통령 선거 보도사진은 선거운동에서 정교하게 연출된 상황에서 촬영되기 때문에 그 안에 담긴 프레임은 정치인과 언론 양자 상호작용의 결과물이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 조선일보, 한국일보, 한겨레 등 한국의 주요 일간지에 게재된 2020년 미 대선 보도사진의 프레임을 신문사의 보도사진 채택과 정치인의 프레임 전략의 차원에서 분석했다. 분석 결과 세 신문의 미 대선 보도사진에는 특정 후보에게 유리하거나 불리한 편향성은 드러나지 않았다. 그러나 보도사진 채택에서 조선일보는 두 신문에 비해 흥미성 프레임을 선호했으며, 한국일보, 한겨레는 관계성 프레임과 사실성 프레임을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 정치인의 전략적 프레임 선택 차원에서 보면 트럼프는 ‘강력한 미국 프레임’을 바이든은 ‘정권 교체 프레임’을 실체적 강조의 선택으로 채택했다. 바이든은 코로나 방역 수칙을 준수하는 선거운동 모습을 보여주었으며, 이는 트럼프의 코로나19 방역 실패를 꼬집는 대항적 강조의 선택 프레임으로 작용했다. 바이든이 트럼프에 비해 다양한 세력과의 연계를 보여주는 ‘경쟁적 강조의 선택’을 활발하게 활용했음을 알 수 있었다.
A news frame is a linguistic and visual device that helps readers understand what the news means. As presidential election coverage photos are taken in elaborately staged situations on the campaign trail, the frames they contain can be seen as the result of a bilateral interaction between politicians and the media. This study analyzes the framing of the 2020 U.S. presidential election coverage in Korea's major daily newspapers, including Chosun Ilbo, The Korea Times, and Hankyoreh, in terms of the newspapers' adoption of coverage and politicians' framing strategies. The results show that the three newspapers' coverage of the U.S. presidential election did not show any bias in favor of or against any candidate. However, in terms of coverage adoption, the Chosun Ilbo preferred an interesting frame compared to the other two newspapers, while the Hankook Ilbo and Hankyoreh preferred a relational frame and a factual frame. In terms of politicians' choice of strategic frames, Trump adopted the "strong America frame" and Biden adopted the "regime change frame" as a choice of substantive emphasis. Biden's campaign image of adhering to coronavirus quarantine protocols served as a counter-emphasis frame of choice, pointing to Trump's failure to do so. We can see that Biden actively utilized the 'competitive emphasis choice' to show his connections with various forces compared to Trump.
