본 연구는 아동의 반려동물에 대한 애착과 공감, 또래관계 간의 관계를 살펴보고, 반려동물 애착과 또래관계 간의 관계에서 공감의 매개효과를 분석하였다. 연구대상은 현재 개와 고양이를 기르고 있는 초등학교 4-6학년 아동 157명이었다. 연구도구는 아동의 반려동물 애착척도, 아동공감척도, 또래관계척도를 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS program(ver. 23.0)과 Macro process(ver. 4.1)을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아동의 반려동물 애착과 인지적ㆍ정서적 공감, 또래관계 간에 유의한 정적 상관이 나타났다. 둘째, 반려동물 애착과 또래관계 간의 관계에서 인지적ㆍ정서적 공감의 부분 매개효과가 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 반려동물 애착이 아동의 공감을 통해 긍정적 또래관계 발달에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 의미한다.
This study sought to examine the relationships between children's attachment to companion animals, empathy, and peer relationships, and analyzed the mediating effect of empathy in the relationship between children's attachment to companion animals and peer relationships. The participants of the study comprised 157 children in the 4-6th grades of elementary school who currently are raising dogs and cats. The research tools used were the Lexington Attachment to Pet Scale, Children's Empathy Scale, Peer Relationship Scale. The collected data were analyzed by means of both SPSS program(ver. 23.0) & Macro process(ver. 4.1.). The results are as follows. First, there were significant positive correlations between children's companion animal attachment, empathy, and peer relationships. Second, the partial mediating effects of cognitive and emotional empathy appeared in the relationship between attachment to companion animals and peer relationships. These results suggest that attachment to companion animals can affect the development of positive peer relationships through the fuller development of children's empathy.
