이 글의 목적은 웹소설 연구의 현황을 비판적으로 검토하여 이후 웹소설 연구의 방향을 전망하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 2015년부터 2022년까지 학술연구정보서비스를 대상으로 웹소설을 키워드로 검색한 결과 도출된 국내 학술논문을 검토 대상으로 삼았다. 국내 학술지에 게재된 논문을 대상으로 한다는 점에서 웹소설 연구사에 대한 세밀한 분석을 수행하는 것은 제한적일 수밖에 없을 것이다. 그럼에도 학술 담론장에서 지난 10여 년 동안 진행되어온 웹소설 연구사의 주요 경향을 조망할 수 있었다. 웹소설에 관한 연구에서 먼저 눈에 띄는 것은 웹소설의 발생 및 전개 과정에 대한 논의이다. 이와 관련해서는 웹소설을 새로운 소설의 장르 또는 장르소설로 보는 입장과 웹 플랫폼 기반의 문화 콘텐츠로 보는 입장으로 대별된다. 그리고 웹소설 연구에서 가장 많은 비중을 차지하고 있는 것은 각 장르별 웹소설 서사 구조의 분석 및 그것의 효과에 대한 논의이다. 이러한 논의들은 대체로 장르 인식 및 웹 플랫폼의 기능과 역할이 어떻게 웹소설의 서사 구조 형성에 영향을 끼치는가를 밝히는 데 주안점을 두었다. 한편, 웹소설 독자 연구에서는 독자의 특징을 파악하는 것을 중심으로 하여 독서 행위의 조건 및 과정에 관한 논의들이 주를 이루었다. 이와 같은 웹소설 연구는 웹소설 작가-독자의 위상 및 문화적 수행성, 웹 플랫폼의 활성화와 문화 콘텐츠의 확산 속에서 이후에도 다채로운 방식으로 전개될 것으로 예상된다.
The purpose of this article is to critically review the current status of web novel research and to predict the future direction of web novel research. To this end, domestic academic papers derived as a result of keyword search for web novels in RISS (Research Information Sharing Service) from 2015 to 2022 were reviewed. Since the papers are published in domestic academic journals, detailed analysis of the history of web novel research will inevitably be limited. Nevertheless, in the academic discourse, it was possible to observe the main trends in the history of web novel research that has been conducted for the past 10 years. The first thing that stands out in the research on web novels is the discussion of the origin and development process of web novels. In this regard, it is largely divided into a position to view web novels as a new novel genre or genre novel, and a position to view web novels as cultural contents based on the web platform. And the most important thing in web novel research is the analysis of the web novel narrative structure for each genre and the discussion of its effects. These discussions have largely focused on revealing how genre recognition and the function and role of web platforms affect the formation of the narrative structure of web novels. On the other hand, in the study of web novel readers, discussions on the conditions and process of reading behavior centered on identifying the characteristics of readers were the main focus. Web novel research like this will be developed in a variety of ways in the future in the status and cultural performativity of web novel writers-readers, the vitalization of the web platform, and the spread of cultural contents.
