본 연구의 목적은 현대 대중문화에 재현되는 김옥균과 갑신정변의 역사담론이 각 시대에 따라 어떻게 변형되고, 재생산되어 가는지를 재조명하는데 있다. 그 예로 『김옥균을 죽여라』는 1924년 일제 식민지 조선 경성을 작품 배경으로 하여, 주인공 류경호가 ‘홍종우의 책’을 둘러싸고 이어지는 일련의 사건을 중심으로 전개되고 있다. 즉 김옥균이 죽음을 맞이한 지 1924년 시점에서, 과연 홍종우가 김옥균을 암살한 진범인지하는 진위 문제는 지금까지 조선과 일본정부 간 밝혀내지 못한 진실들을 작가의 상상력으로 채워 재구성하고 있다. 이러한 김옥균의 행적과 죽음은 과거 조선 및 일본과 중국에 커다란 반향을 불러일으켰을 뿐만 아니라, 현재 대중들에게 역사에 대한 반성과 비판은 물론, 새로운 역사인식의 길을 열어주는 역할을 한다는 의미에서 그의 위상과 의의는 앞으로도 유효하다고 본다.
The purpose of this study is to re-examine how Kim Ok-gyun’s historical discourse, reproduced in modern and contemporary popular culture, is transformed and reproduced according to each era. For example, ‘Kill Kim Ok-gyun’ is unfolding around a series of events surrounding ‘The Book of Hong Jong-woo’ by Ryu Gyeong-ho, with the work of the 1924 Japanese colonial Joseon Gyeongseong as a background. In other words, In 1924 after Kim Ok-gyun’s death, the truthfulness of whether Hong Jong-woo was the real culprit who assassinated Kim Ok-gyun. The truths that the governments have not been able to uncover are reconstructed with the artist’s imagination. As such, Kim Ok-gyun’s deeds and death not only caused great repercussions in Joseon, Japan and China in the past, but also I think his status and significance will remain valid in the future in the sense that he plays a role in opening a new path for historical recognition as well as reflection and criticism on history to the current public.
