淸代 後期 西洋人들이 官話課本(Mandarin Book)을 編纂한 것은 中國에 거주하는 외국인들의 中國語 학습을 돕기 위한 것이다. Herbert Allen Giles가 편찬한 『漢語無師自明』은 漢語史의 연구에 있어서 重要한 地位를 차지하고 있다. 『漢語無師自明』이 기록하는 北京官話는 現代 北京官話音系와 거의 동일하다. 『漢語無師自明』의 제1판은 겨우 60쪽으로 數字, 課文, 語法, 詞匯 등 4부분으로 나누어져 있다. 앞 5과의 후반부는 英語와 漢語의 注音만 있지 對應하는 漢字가 없다. 『漢語無師自明』은 口語만을 강조하고 漢語의 읽기(讀)와 쓰기(寫)를 강조하지 않았다. 본문 뒤에 있는 어법부분도 매우 짧다. Giles의 漢語敎材, 『漢語無師自明』은 중국에 온 서양인이 단기간에 기본적인 漢語 일상회화를 익힐 수 있도록 편찬한 교재라는 특징을 가지고 있다. 『漢語無師自明』은 매우 간단하고 이해하기 쉬운 漢語敎材로 편찬되었다. 『漢語無師自明』의 가장 큰 특징은 간단한 영어를 사용하여 漢語 語彙, 구(Phrase), 문장을 注音한다는 것이다. 예로 1922년 第8版의 “你爲什么不來”(Why don't you come?)의 英語讀音은 “Nee way shummo poo li?이다. 이러한 發音은 漢語와의 발음이 실제로 크게 차이 나지 않고 英語를 母國語로 쓰는 학습자들이 쉽게 표현할 수 있다. Giles의 주음방식은 영어의 모음과 자음으로 恣意的이지 않고 엄격하게 漢語를 표기한다. 교재의 문형정리를 통해 Giles가 漢語 口語와 일상생활 수업을 중시한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이 교재의 본문 내용도 학습자가 기본 文型을 학습한 후, 풍부하고 구체적인 일상적인 언어를 구사할 수 있으며, 궁극적으로 중국인과 口語교류를 할 수 있도록 하는 것이 목적이다. Giles의 漢字學習 敎材 『百個最好的漢字』의 英語 書名이 “How to Begin Chinese”인 것을 참조하면 이것도 『漢語無師自明』과 마찬가지로 漢語 初學者 學習교재라고 할 수 있다. 또, 『漢語無師自明』과 비교하면 『漢語無師自明』는 口語學習을 위한 것이고, 『百個最好的漢字』는 書面語학습을 위한 것이다. Giles는 漢語 교재에서 口語 구(Phrase)를 소개하고 설명하고 있다. 『漢語無師自明』은 간단한 口語敎本으로서 西洋人의 口語敎學을 선도하고 있다.
The Mandarin Book in the late Qing dynasty was published by the Chinese to help foreigners in China learn. Herbert Allen Giles's 『Chinese Without a Teacher』 playa important role in Chinese history. Mandarin compiled in 『Chinese Without a Teacher』 almost same Mandarin. The first edition of 『Chinese Without a Teacher』, only 60 pages is divided into four parts: Numerals, Texts, Grammar, and Vocabulary. In the latter half of the previous five chapters, there are only English and Chinese Pronunciation no Chinese Letter. It emphasized only spoken language and did not emphasize Chinese reading and writing. The grammar behind the text is also very short. Gile’s 『Chinese Without a Teacher』 is characterized by a textbook compiled by Westerners who come to China to learn basic daily conversation in a short period of time. The book is compiled as a very simple and easy-to-understand book. The biggest characteristic of 『Chinese Without a Teacher』 is that they use simple English to write Word, Phrase, and Sentence. For example, for example, the eighth edition of 1922, “你爲什么不來”(Why don't you come?) English pronunciation is “Nee way shum mo poo li?” Such pronunciation does not actually differ significantly from Chinese and can be easily expressed by learners who speak English as their first language. Giles's main style is English vowels and consonants, which are not arbitrary but strictly Chinese. Through the compilation of the text, we can see that Giles values Chinese spoken language and daily life classes. The text content of this textbook is also aimed at allowing learners to learn basic sentences, then speak rich and specific everyday languages, and ultimately exchange spoken words with Chinese. 『Chinese Without a Teacher』 is for learning spoken language, and 『How to Begin Chinese』 is for learning written language.
