Abstract
Background: Patch test is the gold standard for the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. After the 1st reading, researchers generally mark the antigen attachment site by drawing an underline with a pen. However at the 2nd reading, it is often difficult to read because the antigen attachment site marked with the pen is often erased. Objectives: To evaluate how helpful it is to protect the patch test application sites with the Mepitel OneTM (Mölnlycke, Sweden). Methods: A total of 30 subjects were enrolled. The patch tests with 30 antigens were performed on the upper and lower back of the subjects. After the 1st reading, each antigen attachment site was marked in a straight line (1.5cm each) with a pen. Then the Mepitel One was applied to the patch test area on the upper back but not on the lower part. At the 2nd reading, researchers scored how much of the straight remained. If it remained the same as the beginning, it was given 2 points. If slightly blurred, 1 point was given, and if erased at all, it was given 0 point. Results: The average score of the patch test site without Mepitel One was 7.6 points, while the average score of the patch test site with Mepitel One was 48.47 points (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was easier to interpret the patch test with Mepitel One because there were more straight lines left than without Mepitel One. Thus, using Mepitel One to protect the patch test site helps to interpret the 2nd reading.
