Abstract
In Republic of Korea, most strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) fruits are produced in greenhouses, and ‘Sulhyang’ and ‘Maehyang’ are two most popular cultivars. Cutting propagation with runner plants is an efficient new way to multiply strawberry plants for it can guarantee high survival and rooting ratios, saving time and money. The objective of this study was to find out the optimal growth factors in early growth stage of runner plants of ‘Sulhyang’ and ‘Maehyang’. The study consists of three parts, PGR, medium and fogging, and supplementary lighting. In the first experiment, mother plants were treated with a 100 mg·L−1 solution of one of three PGRs (CCC, BA, and ETH) combined with three application methods (injection, spray, and irrigation) to find out the most helpful way in controlling number and length of runners induced. In the second experiment, four growing media (BVB Medium, rockwool cube, granular rockwool, and Tosilee Medium) and five durations of fogging (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days) were compared. In the last experiment, four LED light qualities (W, R, BR, and B) at 100 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD were used as sources of supplementary morning lighting (SML) from 5:00-7:00 am to study stomatal and photosynthetic characteristics. The BA injected into crowns shortened, strengthened, and induced more runners without harmful effects on mother or daughter plants. For higher survival and rooting ratios, and better growth and development, BVB Medium along with fogging for 9-12 days was recommended. And blue SML induced more runners, stimulated stomata to open, and increased contents of soluble sugar and starch of propagated plants.
