Abstract
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are taking large portion of display market owing to its advantages such as high stability against external environments, low price competitiveness, and ease of large-scale display. Among them horizontally aligned cells (IPS, FFS) are widely used because of their wide-viewing angle characteristics. But in dark state, they are observed lots of light leakage at a certain viewing angles. Uniaxial compensation films (A-plate, C-plate) are used to prevent such light leakage at a specific viewing angles. When the compensation film is used, the light leakage dereases at the certain viewing angle, but an undesired color mura with a reddish color occurs. In this paper, we propose a horizontally aligned liquid crystal cell in which a new dye doped compensation film is present above and below the cell so that in the dark state, there is little light leakage at the specific viewing angle, no color mura with a reddish color and a low external light reflection. The proposed dye doped liquid crystal compensation film is likely to be used mainly in the display market, which requires high electro-optical properties such as high contrast ratio, low light reflection.
