Abstract
재즈 보컬리스트 존 핸드릭스는 가사 없이 노래하는 보컬리즈의 아버지로 불리며 보컬 즉흥연주 분야에 선구적인 역할을 하였다. 그는 기존 보컬들이 시도 하지 않은 원작자의 솔로 코러스 부분을 개사하여 재창조하는 방법을 시도함으로서 보컬리즈 운동의 새로운 작곡의 바람을 일으켰으며 비밥시대에 독보적인 흐름의 축을 담당하였다. 본 논문에서는 그의 즉흥연주기법이 완성되어졌다고 평가 받는 시점의 앨범을 선정하여 당대 최고의 남성 재즈 보컬리스트로 평가 받는 커트 엘링과 비교 연구함으로서 특징들을 고찰함에 그 목적이 있다. 두 보컬은 다수의 기법에서 유사한 특징을 포함하며 동시에 뚜렷한 차이점을 갖는다. 그 유사성은 다음과도 같다. 두 보컬은 전통적인 방식의 기법들을 공유한다. 선율은 리듬과 필연적으로 연계되어지며 8분음·16분음의 소재의 사용이 공통적이다. 또한, 전통적인 스캣 실라브스를 사용하며, 유사한 코드 톤의 사용을 보여준다. 반면에 차이점은 다음과 같다. 존 헨드릭는 전반적으로 활동적인 솔로를 보여주지만, 선율의 균형과 조화를 이루는데 방향을 두고 있다. 그러나, 커트 엘링은 전체적으로 투박하고, 불규칙적이나 복합적인 여럿의 기법들을 혼용하여 사용함으로서 양반된 차이점을 보이는 것이 특징이다. 논자는 본 고찰을 당대 최고의 남성 보컬리스트들을 비교 분석함으로서 현 시대 재즈 보컬에게 주는 음악적 의의와 과제에 대해 생각해보는 계기로 삼고자 한다. 본 연구는 당대 보컬 즉흥연주 기법의 현 주소를 확인 할 수 있는 계기가 되리라 확신한다.
A jazz vocalist, Jon Hendricks is called the father of vocalese who sings without lyrics playing a leading role in vocal improvisation. He changed and recreated the solo chorus part of original music. He drafted contemporary trends in composing through the vocalese movement. He was in charge of unique and unrivaled flow of the bebop period. In this study, albums in the period when his improvisation technique was perfected, and compared to the most prominent jazz vocalist of the time, Kurt Elling. The two vocals have many common characteristics in many techniques; hence, showing distinctive differences at the same time. The similarities are as follows: They share traditional techniques. The melody is inevitably connected to rhythms, and the use of materials in eighth and sixteenth notes are identical. Also, they used traditional scat syllables and similar use of code tones. In contrast, they show unique differences. Hendricks showed active solos focused on the balance and harmony of melodies; whereas, Elling combines complex techniques from rustic and irregular. This study intended to reckon the significance and further studies on the jazz vocalists of now. I am sure that this study would provide a chance to consider the current state of vocal improvisation techniques of current period.
