Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of efficient parent volunteer activities and ultimately to seek ways to activate school libraries, through grasping the current situation of parent volunteer workers management at elementary schools employing and not employing librarian, which are located at the regions of Seoungsan-gu and Uichang-gu (former Changwon-si) in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, and through comparing and analyzing differences in the actual conditions of the activities. The operation and management of the parent volunteer system were found to be different according to the existence of an appointed librarian, and perceptions on library held by a librarian teacher, a librarian, a teacher in charge of library, and parents. Particularly, in the case of elementary schools not employing librarian, they had much difficulty in parent volunteer activities. This study conducted investigation and analysis, using a questionnaire survey targeting parents who were engaging in volunteer work for school libraries. As for the statistical treatment of collected data, the data was coded, and was analyzed using SPSS (ver.10.0: SPSS Inc., 2000), a statistical package program. The major results obtained from the Chi square test and the frequency analysis are as follows: First, a librarian teacher and a librarian, who are 'expert personnel.' should be appointed for the proper operation and management of school library. Parent volunteer workers, teachers in charge of library, and assistant teachers for school affairs pointed out problems in library operation, such as those of books management, overdue library books, acquisition of books, incidents of lost books, guidance in library events, library-user education, classes using library, and so on. To overcome such problems, it is important before everything to appoint a librarian teacher and a librarian, experts of school library. Second, as for the frequency of volunteer activities, once a week was the most on the whole. And it was found that volunteer work hours considered optimum were 2~3 hours. Third, the frequency of training in volunteer activities considered suitable according to groups was once in the first semester and once in the second semester. And 93.4% of the respondents replied that training was helpful. Fourth, as for problems at schools not employing a librarian, the lack of classes using library in connection with a curriculum was most frequently found. As for positive changes expected from the appointment of a librarian teacher, 'Systematic education in the use of data will be performed.' was found most, followed by the activation of library operations such as the facilitation of reading programs and cultural events, the purchasing of new materials, education in reading, classes using library, and so on.
