Abstract
The drum is one of the most ancient and diverse musical instruments. All down the ages, the drum has been broad utilized which has meanings of sacred colors and supernatural power. Therefore, the drum has been an essential ingredient to the traditional culture and, in turn, influences the shape of the culture in all aspects. There is very close relationship between the drum and ancient dancing art in China. The drum is not only the component of ancient music but also the prop to the dance. In ancient times, the primitive residence use the drum to offer a sacrifice to heaven and pray for rain. The ‘drum’has been given the names and classified in the ancient book "Yue Li"during ChunqiuZhanguo period of late Zhou dynasty. The drum has formed its own culture through the history and fashions many artistic forms, including the music and dance, in the contemporary era. Consequently, the drum dance becomes an indispensable part in the dance art. This article stars with the introduction of drum dance. Based on Chinese and Korean drum dances, we investigated the historical culture and origin of this dance art. The extant drum dance from ancient days has been sorted out and the typical dance movements in the dance of both countries have been analyzed and compared.Although Chinese and Korean drum dances have common ground, for example they all delivery the art in terms of the drum, they have differences in their cultural origin, historical thread, orchestic characteristic and creations. As a result, they mold individual dance images without losing the general character and manifest attractive charm as well as the colorful aesthetic perception.Regardless of the drum dance show or teaching, the skills in dancing have been developed quickly. On the one hand, the national characteristics are from the traditional drum dance. On the other hand, the creation techniques and the body language of modern dance inspire the work of drum dance which emphasizes on the rhythmicity, the artistry and the dramaticism. At present days, more and more dancing directors and actors are interested in drum dance which possesses the representative difference of culture connotation between the western and eastern dancing cultures.
