Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze EBS program used in students' listening activities in order to improve their English listening skills. It further deals with the common pronunciation problems of all students to find the ultimate ways not only to improve their listening skills but also to increase their interest in English language in general. As this thesis indicates, EBS programs are useful for all students in an EFL environment because it contains authentic materials spoken by native speakers highly emphasizing the proper pronunciation, accent, stress, and intonation in a natural speed. In the beginning of the paper, students' interest of the subject, confidence of their listening skills, and familiarity of the EBS materials are briefly discussed. As the survey indicates, the students were having difficulties in utilizing the EBS listening materials. That is, since the speed of the EBS listening materials were too fast for students to understand, most of them lost interest as well as confidence in improving their English listening skills. Based on the experiment conducted, the following results are obtained: the students make mistakes in their listening skills mostly due to the sound alternations. Another, the lesson plan specifically made for listening skill was suggested and applied in their classroom activities. The result suggests that dictation activities while listening to EBS has a positive effect on their listening test. Dictation activities also has greatly increased their interest in listening to EBS significantly. As many studies has shown, improvements in listening skills will eventually improve their reading and writing skills, thus, the importance of listening skills must be highly stressed by all students in an EFL environment.
