As information regarding North Korea is overflowing, identifying what is true and what is not is becoming important. In Korea, issues regarding North Korean leaders are main matters of interest above all. In particular, Korean media has shown rapid responses to ‘North Korean successor issues’. Because access to information regarding North Korea is blocked off, the media is a very important window to information access. This study critically examined domestic media reports on Kim Jung Il in 1974 and Kim Jung Eun in 2009 and compared the two time periods. Conclusively, errors such as ambiguous sources, uncritical citations of overseas reports, and similar reports among the press were discovered in both periods. Also, some press members have made false reports, causing confusion among readers. Of course, due to the obstructive nature of North Korea’s society, it is difficult to judge information regarding it. However, it is at least necessary to be cautious towards excessive gossip or articles which cannot be verified. People must always be aware that reports about North Korea greatly affect North Korean policies, North-South relations, and public sentiment.
북한에 대한 정보가 넘쳐나면서 정보의 사실 여부를 가려내는 일이 중요해지고 있다. 무엇보다 한국에서는 북한 지도자에 관한 모든 문제가 주요 관심사항이다. 특히, 우리 언론은 ‘북한 후계 문제’에 신속한 반응을 보여 왔다. 대부분 북한 정보에 대한 접근이 차단되어 있기 때문에 언론은 가장 중요한 정보 접근의 창(窓)이다. 본 연구는 국내 언론의 1974년 김정일, 2009년 김정은 보도를 비판적으로 검토하고 두 시기를 비교하였다. 결과적으로 두 시기 모두 불투명한 취재원, 해외보도의 무비판적인 인용, 언론사 간 유사한 보도 등을 통해 오류가 발견되었다. 또 일부 언론은 중대한 오보를 발생시켜 독자에게 혼란을 주기도 했다. 물론, 북한 사회의 폐쇄성으로 인해 정보에 대한 판단을 내리기는 어렵다. 하지만 적어도 지나친 가십 기사나 확인할 수 없는 기사는 경계할 필요가 있다. 북한 관련 보도가 대북정책과 남북관계, 국민 정서에 중대한 영향을 끼친다는 사실을 항상 인지할 필요가 있다.
