The present paper analyzes the independent diplomacy of the type Chosun Kingdom adopted in the midst of the 19th century‘s Western rush into Asian countries in an effort to free itself from the oppression of the Ching Dynasty to which Chosun Kingdom traditionally had been attached within the framework of toadyism and dependency as a form of relationship between the two countries. The current situation surrounding the Korean peninsula has developed in the just complex pattern similar to that in the mid and latter part of the 19th century when the then powers of the world confronted sharply with their move to open the ports of Chosun Kingdom forcibly. As the post-cold war period has arrived now in full scale and the balance among the world powers in the northeastern Asia is about to change, nothing seems more critical than establishing diplomatic strategies to find a solution out of complex interests that can meet the fervent desire of the people of the world‘s only divided nation. This paper aims to seek solution by analyzing foreign policy of the Chosun Kingdom that employed self-reliant policy as a countermeasure against Chinese lust to annex Chosun under the scheme to maintain the old paradigm of relationship between Chosun Kingdom as a country which solicited approval for enthronement of kings from Ching and Ching as a country which tried to put Chosun under its hegemony in the same manner as practiced even during the mid and latter part of the 19th century.
본 논문은 19세기 서세동점의 국제현실 속에서 조선이 전통적으로 사대자소(事大字小)했던 청과의 관계를 중심으로, 청의 조선에 대한 종속문제와 조선이 청의 압제로부터 벗어나기 위한 노력의 일환으로 실시했던 자주적인 외교의 행태를 분석하였다.현재 한반도의 주변정세는 19세기 중후반 조선을 개항시키기 위해 강대국들이 첨예하게 대립했던 상황과 같이 복잡하게 전개되고 있다. 특히, 탈냉전시대가 본격적으로 전개되면서 동북아시아에서 강대국간의 세력관계가 변화하였기 때문에 더욱 그러하고, 세계 유일의 분단국으로 통일을 갈망하는 국민들이 있는 남북한의 현실 때문에 강대국의 이해관계 속에서 그 해법을 찾기 위한 외교적 전략이 절실히 필요하다. 본 논문은 당면한 문제의 해결을 위한 방법으로 19세기 중후반 사대책봉관계의 유지 속에 속방으로 조선을 종속시키려 했던 중국의 정책을 고찰하고, 이를 해결하기 위한 방략으로 채택했던 조선의 자주적 외교정책의 분석을 통해 해법을 찾는 것이 그 목적이다.
