이 연구는 대중민주주의라는 통치형태 속에서 우리 사회가 겪고 있는 사회갈등과 혼란을 명확하게 진단하고 이에 대한 해결책을 모색하고자 진행되었다. 이를 위해 존 듀이가 산업혁명기라는 현재와 유사한 시대적 여건 속에서 제시한 국가에 관한 통찰을 활용하고자 그의 저서인 『공공성과 그 문제들(The Public and Its Problems)』을 중심으로 듀이의 국가론을 분석하였고, 이에 기반하여 교육적 함의를 제시하였다. 연구문제는 다음과 같다. ① 듀이가 생각하는 국가란 무엇인가? ② 듀이가 생각하는 바람직한 국가는 어떠한 국가인가? ③ 이러한 국가를 이루기 위한 교육적 방법은 무엇인가? 연구결과는 다음과 같다. ① 듀이에 따르면 국가는 고정된 실체가 아니라 살아 있는 과정으로, 시공간적으로 다양한 형태로 나타나고, 사적인 것과 공적인 것의 경계가 유동적으로 변화하며, 전통과 관습을 유지하려는 경향을 보이고, 중요한 공적 행위에 개입한다. ② 상호의존의 그물은 넓고 복잡해졌지만 결속력은 약화된 상황에서, 우리는 ‘거대 사회’를 ‘위대한 공동체’로 만들어 나가야 한다. 이를 위해 기호와 상징을 활용하고, 사회적 탐구의 자유와 원활한 공유를 보장해야 한다. ③ 이를 교육적으로 구현하기 위해서는 토론수업의 강화를 통한 ‘위대한 공중’의 육성이 필요하다. 토론교육을 통해 학생들에게 복잡한 사회 현상에 대한 분석능력을 길러 주고, 민주주의적 태도를 습득할 계기를 제공하며, 공동선을 창조하고 이행해 보는 경험을 쌓게 해 주어야 한다. 현대 사회의 끊임없는 갈등을 해소하기 위해서는 위대한 공동체가 필요하며, 위대한 공동체를 위해서는 위대한 공중이 필요하고, 위대한 공중을 위해서는 위대한 교육이 필요하다. 위대한 공동체라는 비전을 세우고 위대한 교육이라는 방법을 통해 이를 실현해 나가야 할 것이다.
This study was conducted to clearly diagnose social conflicts and confusion that our society is experiencing in the form of governance called popular democracy and to seek solutions for them. To this end, in order to utilize the insights of the state presented by John Dewey in the era of the industrial revolution, Dewey's theory of the state was analyzed, focusing on his book The Public and Its Problems, and educational implications were presented based on this. The research question is as follows. ① What is the state? ② What is the desirable state in Dewey's opinion? What are the educational ways to achieve this? The research results are as follows. ① According to Dewey, the state is not a fixed entity but a evolving process. It appears in various forms in time and space, the boundaries between private and public things change fluidly in it, it tries to maintain traditions and customs, and it intervenes in important public matters. ② The net of interdependence has become wide and complex, but solidarity has weakened, and we should change ‘a giant society’ into ‘the great community’. To this end, signs and symbols can be utilized and freedom of social inquiry and sharing the results of it should be guaranteed. ③ In order to realize this educationally, it is necessary to foster ‘the great public’ by strengthening discussion classes. Through discussion classes, students can strengthen their ability to analyze complex social phenomena, have an opportunity to acquire democratic attitudes, and gain experience in creating and implementing the common good. To resolve the constant conflict in modern society, the great community is needed. The great community needs the great public, and the great public needs the great education. We should establish a vision of the great community and realize it through the method of the great education.
