Abstract
The deformation strength (SD) is the property that showed high correlation with binder stiffness (G*/sin δ) and wheel tracking test results, and therefore, was adopted as a mix-design criterion of asphalt mixture in Korea. However, this application was made based mainly on lab-prepared material test results. Therefore, further validation of SD was performed using the rut and SD data from existing street pavements and from circular pavement wheel tracker (CPWT), a semi-accelerated loading facility (ALF), in this study. Four binders and two aggregates were used to prepare 8 asphalt mixes for measuring SD and CPWT rutting test. From existing street pavements, 23 sets of field rut-depth data and SD data from cored specimens at the same pavement sites were collected for regression analyses. It was found that SD values were highly related with rut data by CPWT, and with field rut data from street pavements (R2 = 0.71~0.95). The rut data by CPWT were highly related with binder G*/sin δ of the paved mixes, and with SD values measured from the specimens of paved mixes and the cored specimens from CPWT test sites. Therefore, according to field and semi-field rut and SD data analyses, it was concluded that SD was a property providing a reasonable estimation of the rut potential of asphalt mixes, even though it was measured by a simple static loading test method.
