Abstract
Total estimated health care spending increased from $1.4 trillion to $3.1 trillion from 1996 to 2016. In 2016, private insurance, public insurance and out-of-pocket payments accounted for 48.0%, 42.6% and 9.4% of health care spending. The annualized adjusted spending growth rates for private insurance, public insurance and out-of-pocket payments were 2.6%, 2.9% and 1.1%, respectively.
