Abstract
Media stories about new civil airliners have emphasized the increasing use of lighter materials in constructions. However, traditional metals such as steel alloys continue to play a major part in the efficient functioning of most aircraft and helicopters. Designers of aircraft look to reduce weight to improve operational efficiency.
