Skepticism lingers over the business case for smart cards stateside

Abstract
A Tower Group report on the development of smart cards worldwide indicates a serge in smart card rollouts among European nations particularly in France but little activity likely in the US until 2003 or 2004. The structure of the banking industry in Europe is allegedly more conducive to the smart card applications. Potential American providers should look into debit/credit applications rather than simply focusing on electronic purse.
