Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (IAC), funded by Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority (NRA), undertook the excavation of a prehistoric settlement site under Ministerial Directions at the site of Rathwilladoon 2 and 3 along the N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme (Figure 1). The following report describes the results of archaeological fieldwork at that site. The area was fully excavated by Ed Lyne (MA, MIAI) under Ministerial Directions A044 and Registration Number E3656 issued by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DEHLG) in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland. The fieldwork took place between 1 October 2007 and 9 November 2007. Rathwilladoon is an interesting example of a landscape reused by people at different times in prehistory. The site was situated on a well-drained south-facing slope, overlooking a lake that, in time, became a bog and would always have been a suitable location for settlement.
