Abstract
This final archaeological report describes the results of the excavation carried out at the site of Kilbeg 8 in the townland of Kilbeg, Co. Westmeath (Figures 1–3) as part of an archaeological mitigation program associated with the N6 Phase 2: Kilbeggan to Athlone Dual Carriageway Scheme. Archaeological fieldwork was carried out under ministerial direction by Ed Lyne of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (IAC Ltd) and was funded by Westmeath County Council & National Roads Authority under the National Development Plan 2000–2006, 2007–2013 and the EU Structural fund. Kilbeg 8 was identified while accessing the adjacent site at Kilbeg 6, when the top of a stone arch was noticed protruding slightly from a hollow in the field (Plate 1) The site had not been identified during the test-trenching programme undertaken by IAC Ltd in July 2005 (Ministerial Direction No.: A016/029, Patricia Lynch). It was noted during the EIS that the ‘landowner said there was a lime kiln present in the centre of the field (field 181) however it was not found during a thorough field inspection (Riada Consult 2003, EIS Appendix 6A, 21). The site was excavated between 10 and 19 May 2006 with a team of 1 director, 1 supervisor and 8 site assistants. The site was located on the edge of a slight rise, in an area that is otherwise wet and low-lying, at a height of 70m OD to the south of the existing N6, c. 3.5km WNW of Kilbeggan town (Westmeath OS sheet 037). It faces out from the east edge of the rise over the lower ground in that direction. The site was assigned the following identification data: Site Name: Kilbeg 8; Ministerial Direction No.: A016/087; Museum No.: E3966; Route Chainage (Ch): 24900–24930; NGR: 229460/236525.
