Abstract
At the request of Meath County Council, Cultural Resource Development Services (CRDS) Ltd. undertook a programme of archaeological excavations during February 2004, in advance of the N2 Finglas-Ashbourne Road Scheme, Cos. Dublin and Meath. This report refers to the excavation of Site 16 (previously designated as Testing Area 16) which lay between road chainage 11160-11680 and side chainage 465-660. This site was located in the townland of Fleenstown Little, in the parish of Donaghmore and the barony of Ratoath, Co. Meath. Site 16 was excavated under licence 03E1312 ext., an extension of the original testing licence. The full extent of the site within the roadtake was archaeologically mitigated. The site consisted of a short length of ditch adjacent to a large enclosure which was identified by the EIS and partially lies within the development footprint. A 12m section of the ditch which was located on the western end of the enclosure was excavated revealing twelve separate fills. These were extremely sterile in nature and thought to be largely the result of alluvial processes. There were a small number of artefacts recovered, ranging between prehistoric to medieval times and although these suggest activity within the vicinity they cannot be used to date the site. No other features of archaeological significance were identified.
